Caregiver App

Caregiver App

SNAP®, which stands for Stop Now And Plan, is an evidence-based cognitive-behavioural model that teaches children struggling with behavioural issues, and their parents, how to manage their emotions and behaviour by getting them to stop, think and plan positive alternatives before acting impulsively. (https://childdevelop.ca/snap/)

The client wanted to have an app that would have the option to show the resources they have on their program. Snap wanted this content to be available for Caregivers, Children and Youth. Instead of having 3 separate apps, they wanted two apps: one for caregivers and children and the second one just for youth.

Let me show you how the Caregiver app started!

Caregiver App UML

Our account manager went back and forth with the client and all the ideas were shared with us. Based on their feedback we adjusted the UML to meet their requirements.

UML Creation: August 2021

After having their UML done it was clear to me that the app will have to face some design challenges, which I like to share with you.

Challenges I found:

  1. The client wanted many options on the main screen; I needed to find a way to avoid cluttered.
  2. They already had a PowerPoint presentation with their designs in mind. I was asked to create a new design, however, once I created them we noticed they did want to stay with the design they had in mind. As a designer, this was a challenge but the client was always right, we needed to make everything look great with what they wanted.

Research

Carezone app

Pacifica app

Caring Bridge app

Flo app

Looking at the different caregiver apps I found, I came to the conclusion that most of them carry a lot of content, graphs and many lists. But the main challenge I faced was to display their goal: STOP NOW, AND, PLAN, three main sections that needed to be displayed as equally important.

In my research I remembered I had one app called Flo, this app had a very simple and easy-to-use interface. So I decided to make the home page based on this app.

First Sketches

One of the things I wanted to do is to add animation to the app and make it interactive even though usually caregiver apps are full of lists and text. I wanted to make this app a bit more welcoming. The app had sections where the parent needed to follow a meditation guide to help their children. I wanted this to be a guided illustration. Also when the caregiver was stressed I imagined the option to hit a virtual punching bag and the repetition will help them to relax and channel their energy to have a better outcome when their children struggle.

However, I found information that eliminated my idea. This is a statement I found on https://sites.psu.edu/  “In 1999, a laboratory experiment was run in order to test the hypothesis that punching bags relieved stress. A group of people was intentionally made upset and then split into two groups. One group was then told to punch a punching bag for two minutes, while the other group did not. The group that had punched the bag was notably more angry after the two-minute period than the group that had not. The subjects linked the anger they had with the aggression of punching the bag, and were unable to calm themselves.”

So based on this research, I decided to search for other ideas.

This animation was an example of what I imagined was something useful for the user.
